Augmented Reality wine tasting at home

Leipzig-based company has developed an AR-supported wine tasting for the home together with sommelier and winemaker Miguel Matthes of the company Winehead.

Guests of the Dresden vinotheque Barceloneta who would like to learn even more about wine will in future be able to order an augmented reality (AR) card game to take home. The game was developed in cooperation with the Leipzig-based company Sensape and offers an interactive experience with a learning effect for the home between all-known wine packages, wine tastings, books or seminars. With its AR solution, Sensape has created a unique solution that combines knowledge transfer with entertainment and enjoyment. 

The AR wine tasting at home is a card game whose playing cards are brought to life by the player's smartphone or tablet. The game consists of an introduction by the owner of the Barceloneta vinotheque Miguel Matthes, a transfer of knowledge through various AR contents, a subsequent wine tasting of four supplied wines from the player's own Winehead collection and a concluding quiz in which the knowledge learned about the appearance, aroma, taste and feel of the wines can be tested. Contents hidden in the playing cards, such as interactive 3D elements, become visible via smartphone using augmented reality. The content can be opened in the browser and makes an app download unnecessary.

"Delight through knowledge". That is Miguel Matthes' motto. "When I ask my guests how they like the wine I recommended to them, I always hear the same thing: delicious! This shows how little attention is paid to the sensory perception of food in general and wine in particular. There would be so much more to say about wine and its effect on our senses. With the AR wine tasting, we want to make a contribution to playfully learning more about the physiology of the human senses using wine as an example. The didactic symbiosis between playing cards and smartphone surprised me myself," he says when talking about the AR wine tasting. Michael Lehnert, Commercial Director of Sensape, adds: "We are very pleased to have won Barceloneta, one of Saxony's leading and multi-award-winning vinotheques, as a partner. Together, we have designed and developed the AR-supported wine tasting and tested it with test persons over several months. The result is a two-hour virtual wine journey to distant vineyards, animated production sites and into the living room at home for tasting. "The wine tasting is designed in such a way that it can also be used as a marketing tool for winemakers, wineries or wine merchants.  In the future, it will also be used for training and further education in the hotel and restaurant industry, e.g. for training future sommeliers.
